Remembering The Blue Lite: A Sheboygan Gay Bar

For years, The Blue Lite was a cornerstone of the LGBTQ+ community in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Founded by Dean Dayton and his mother, Vera, it was more than just a bar; it was a haven, a place to dance, celebrate, and find community.

It was a place that welcomed everyone, and served as a safe space for those traveling between Green Bay and Milwaukee.

A History Steeped in Significance

The name "Blue Lite" itself held a powerful meaning. Legend has it, during the Nazi era in Germany, a blue light signaled a safe space for gay individuals, a beacon of refuge in a time of persecution.

The Blue Lite carried this legacy, offering a sense of security and belonging. The bar proudly proclaimed its mission: "providing a safe fun environment for gay people."

Navigating the Pandemic and Beyond

The Blue Lite, like countless other businesses, faced immense challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Temporary closures, capacity restrictions, and mask mandates impacted the bar's operations. Despite surviving these initial hurdles, the landscape of the bar scene had drastically changed. Sadly, The Blue Lite eventually closed its doors, leaving a void in the community.

The bar's website stated, 'Founded in [year].

When Dean and Vera opened, gay people needed a place to be gay.'

Fond Memories and Lasting Impact

The closure of The Blue Lite left an obvious gap for the community, but its legacy lives on in the memories of those who frequented it.
