Bob and Barbara's Lounge: A Philadelphia Icon Where Everyone's Welcome

For decades, Bob and Barbara's Lounge has been more than just a bar; it's a Philadelphia institution. This beloved South Street spot has carved out a legendary reputation by consistently delivering an unforgettable experience through live music, thrilling sporting events, and dazzling drag shows.

They even proudly claim to be the originators of "The Special" - a potent and popular concoction of bourbon and a beer, initially designed to draw in local musicians. Today, the caliber of talent gracing their stage continues to grow, a testament to the enduring appeal of this unique venue.

A Rich History Rooted in Community and Celebration

The walls of Bob and Barbara's are steeped in history, much of it dedicated to the patrons who've enjoyed "The Special" within its confines.

Rick D, a figure immortalized on the wall, is credited with serving the very first "Special" in 1991. That same year marked a significant turning point when Duva's stepfather, Jack Prince, acquired the iconic dive bar. Its origins, however, trace back further to when Robert Porter and Barbara Carter first opened its doors as a jazz club in 1985.

Yet, even the most cherished vibes sometimes needed a breath of fresh air - or in this case, an open-street performance.

Braving the Pandemic with Outdoor Drag

Like many businesses, Bob and Barbara's had to adapt during the challenging times of the pandemic.

When lockdown orders began to lift, they ingeniously took their celebrated Thursday night drag show outdoors. Amidst the bustling energy of South Street, drag queens performed in full regalia - heels, wigs, and masks - providing moments of joy and escape for a community eager to smile, laugh, and have a good time.

As Duva put it, "People needed to smile, laugh, have a good time."

Philly's Longest-Running Drag Show: A South Street Staple

The outdoor performances became a spectacle in themselves, drawing crowds who would gather to watch the shows from the sidewalk and as cars paused their journeys to take in the vibrant displays.

Lisa Lisa, the charismatic host of the show, proudly states that it's not only Philadelphia's longest-running drag show but also the longest-running drag show in the entire country. Her unique style and the show's infectious energy have undoubtedly contributed to its enduring legacy.

An Inclusive Space for All

Bob and Barbara's Lounge is renowned for its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, attracting a diverse clientele who feel comfortable being their authentic selves.

As Duva beautifully describes the essence of the bar: "The ambiguity of it is the best thing. There's no label. It doesn't matter who you are. You're welcome here." This sentiment of acceptance is precisely why the bar is often imitated but, as Duva proudly asserts, "never duplicated." The spirit of Bob and Barbara's extends beyond just their signature drink; it's woven into the very fabric of the establishment, creating a space where everyone belongs.
